Saffron is a spice extracted from the flower originating in a bulb : crocus sativus (iridaceae).
The crocus sativus bulb is a hardy plant, flowering in autumn.
It originated in Crete.
It multiplies in a vegetative manner in the soil, because the pollen of the flower which it generates is sterile.
Crocus sativus bulbs are harvested in June, and planted in the summer, up until the end of August in France, at 20cm depth, in soil which is reasonably well provided with major and trace elements.
Planting density varies according to different criteria: between 25 and 50 bulbs per square metre.
Safran du Château markets clean, healthy, ready-to-plant crocus sativus bulbs which are graded and in all sizes.
